Most American moviegoers do not realize that 大连万达集团 bought AMC Entertainment Holdings. This summer many of them will watch a movie in a theater owned by the Chinese Dalian Wanda Group (大连万达集团), which operates in the fields of tourism, department stores, cultural industries and... Chinese calligraphy.
For millions of Americans, "the theater near you" is now Chinese.
The theater chain was previously owned by JPMorgan Partners, Apollo Investment Fund and Bain Capital Investors. The transaction should be completed by the end of August. The $2.6 billion deal will mostly cover AMC's debt (cf. Press Release).
AMC (18,500 employees) owns 346 theaters in North America (5,034 screens). It was founded in 1920 in Kansas City, MO. Advertising in AMC's theaters is sold by NCM (National CineMedia).
