Artificial Intelligence: is the race open?

Number of acquisitions in artificial intelligence
(Source: CB Insights)

Artificial Intelligence is going to be everywhere, integrated into more and more companies, into more and more fields. Therefore, we observe a race to acquire new companies, people or technology in that field.
Google and Apple lead the way; they are especially using artificial intelligence for their new phones (it started with SIRI) and now, of course, for new companies.

635 acquisitions since 2010, according to CB Insights (17 September 2019). The very big companies started the movement, but now, smaller companies are entering the race and are acquiring companies in the field. Cybersecurity and healthcare are also sought out, as well as Media and Entertainment companies.

The new buyers are looking for companies in retail and speech, healthcare and sales: NLP mostly. Nevertheless, Apple acquired companies like RealFace (Israel) and Novauris Technologies (United Kingdom), while Google acquired Api.ai, a company that develops software enabling developers to use chatbots. Along the same lines, we see Microsoft acquiring the Canadian company Maluuba (speech recognition, NLP) or, in 2010, Apple acquiring the Californian SIRI.
