When surveyed, three-quarters of American households claim to not want to spend more than $30 for a subscription to streaming services, and 59% would like to spend only 20 dollars. This would mean two or three services, at most.
The survey was conducted by YouGov and The Trade Desk among 2613 US consumers in November 2019 based on a weighted online sample.
According to this survey, 53% of households said they would prefer a service for a reduced fee, paid by advertising, especially if the ads are adapted to their own taste and centers of interest.
On one hand, Netflix already charges $13 a month. On the other hand, NBCUniversal's Peacock would be free for everyone, fully paid by advertising. And then, there is Apple for 4.5 dollars, ESPN+ for 5 dollars a month, Disney+ for 7, Showtime for 11, and Amazon Prime Video for 9 dollars with Hulu and HBO Max launching in May... And, about a third of American households already watch a subscription program paid only by advertising like Roku or Crackle...
So what are American households going to do? Netflix or advertising? People discussing the issue bet one way or another since they have to say something. But they do not know!
